Windows 10 lets you run any app you want at system start up. Some apps, and quite a few Windows services run at start up without your enabling them to. If you’re system is fast, or has an SSD, you’ll find that your start up time isn’t bad at all. For slower systems, and those with hard drives, the start up time can be pretty long.
The Task Manager allows you to check which apps have the most impact on system start up however, if you want to find the start up item order, the Task Manager won’t be of much help. Instead, you need a Microsoft utility called Autoruns.
Start up item order
Download Autoruns from Microsoft, and run it. Go to the Logon tab and look at the list of items that run at start up.
You will see items that you haven’t added yourself. These items will include Windows’ services as well as services that other apps run. There will also be items that are set to run at start up but that your system cannot find because you’ve removed them but we’ll get to those later.
Look at the list and look at the order the items appear in. From top to bottom, you can see the start up item order. The item at the top of this list is the very first thing that starts when I boot to my desktop. The last item on this list is what Windows 10 opens last before start up is complete.
Once users have this information, their next question is usually how they can change the start up item order. The short and simple answer is that there is no way to do that. Windows 10 decides which items need to run first, and which later. It weights different factors when deciding the order e.g., it will start essential components first so that the system is ready to start the other items.
It will also look at how much of an impact an app will have in delaying the start up. It doesn’t matter which order the items were added in.
For example, if you installed an app in January and set it to run when your system boots, and then installed a second app in February and set it to run on start up as well, there is no guarantee that the app you installed in January will run first, followed by the app you installed in February.
As for the items that Autoruns can’t find, it’s a good idea to disable them from this list. Windows 10 might be looking for them and that might be delaying the start up time.
