The Mail app has a special inbox called ‘Focused‘. It can be enabled and disabled by users but the app decides which mails will appear in the Focused inbox. All other emails are sorted into an inbox called ‘Others’. Normally, these are auto-generated emails such as those you get from social media sites when there’s new activity. The app is right to separate them however, it does get it wrong at times or perhaps you’d live to view certain emails in your Focused inbox even if they are from a social media site. Here’s how you can move a message to the Focused Inbox in Mail.

Move A Message To The Focused Inbox

Open Mail and go to the Others tab. Look for the email that you want to move to the Focused inbox. Right-click it and select the “Move to Focused” option from the context menu.

This will move just that one message to the Focused inbox. All other messages that are from the same sender will still be sent to the Others inbox.

If you want to move all messages from a particular sender to the Focused inbox, right-click it in the Others inbox and select the “Always move to Focused” option from the context menu.

Move Message To Others Inbox

This works both ways i.e. you can also remove a message from the Focused inbox and send it to the Others inbox if you like. The process is similar; go to the Focused inbox and right-click the message you want to move. Select ‘Move to others’ from the context menu to send that particular message to the Others inbox. All future messages from the same sender will continue to appear in the Focused inbox. If you want all messages from a particular sender to go to the Others inbox instead of the Focused inbox, right-click it and select ‘Always move to others’.

It goes without saying that you can reverse this any time you want. All you have to do is right-click a message and send it to the a different inbox on a per-message or sender basis.

The Mail app is more or less basic. The Focused inbox is one of the smarter features in the Mail app. The Focused inbox is a feature Microsoft copied from Outlook. Microsoft has a much more capable email app for Windows in the form of Outlook. Since Mail comes bundled with Windows 10, i.e. it’s free, the company isn’t likely to develop competition for its main email app. It keeps the Mail app relevant and if it sees fit, it will add a few good features to it.
