The Google Pixel 2 comes with a very exclusive version of the Google Camera app. This particular version has two features that most  Android users are dying to get their hands on; Motion Photo and Face Retouching. Motion Photo is basically Google’s name for Live Photos. Face Retouching is Google’s version of studio lighting. Whether these features compare with those on the iPhone is a different debate. The thing is, both features are restricted to the Pixel 2. Fortunately, developers have been trying to port it to other phones and have been successful. You can get Motion Photo and Face Retouching on Nexus phones.

For now, you can only get the two features on a Nexus 5X and a Nexus 6P. We’re sure that it’s only a matter of time before someone ports the app for other devices. Developers will often port the Google Camera app for other devices to unlock its awesome features, like taking RAW photos, for other Android users.

Motion Photo And Face Retouching On Nexus Phones

Download Google Camera NX from XDA Developers. There are two versions of this app ZSL and non-ZSL. ZSL refers to Zero Shutter Lag. It’s another feature that was Pixel only. Google Camera NX brought it to Nexus phones.

All you need to do is install the app and launch it. The Motion Photo feature works with both the front and rear end camera. The Face Retouching feature, understandably, only works with the front camera.

The app has two new buttons; the one with a face enables Face Retouching. The one with the A inside the circle enables Motion Photo.

You can set Motion Photo to activate automatically, or to always be on. It’s like the two settings options for the flash. The Face Retouching only has an On or Off state.

To view your Motion Photos, open the Photos app. Motion Photos play automatically when you open them and you can tap the toggle to play/stop the photo. To save the photo as a still photo, tap the more options button at the top right and select ‘Save as still photo’ from the menu.

Mileage May Vary

Google Camera NX is essentially the same Google Camera app that you have on your phone but with these two Pixel only features made available on it. You may or may not get the same results with Face retouching as you would on a Pixel phone. Both the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P have fairly decent cameras and during tests we did notice that Face Retouching improved the lighting in selfies. You might need to take a few photos to really be able to tell the difference.
