If phantom vibrations bother you, or you feel the default vibrations on your iPhone don’t do a good enough job of alerting you when you have new notification, then there’s good news. iOS has a built-in feature that lets you create your very own custom vibration. It sounds complicated and nearly impossible but Apple’s found a way to make it happen and the feature has been part of iOS for a good while now. Here’s how you can create your very own vibration pattern for alerts on your iPhone.

Go to the Settings app and scroll down to the Sound section. Tap it and tap the type of sound that you want to change the vibration for. Sounds are associated with functions such as ringtone, Text tone, new voicemail, etc. Tap the sound and then the Vibration option at the very top of the sounds list. Scroll to the bottom and tap ‘Create New Vibration’.

You will now see a ‘New Vibration’ screen which is mostly blank. Tap once to record a single vibration and tap and hold to record a longer vibration. The screen gives you visual feedback as it records your vibration pattern. When you’re done, you can ‘feel’ the pattern you’ve created by tapping the Play button. The progress bar shows you where you’ve set a vibration and where there’s a pause.

If you like what you’ve created, tap Save and name the vibration pattern. You can now assign it to the respective alert type.
